Does anyone really want to know where the maker of these songs lives (Birmingham, Alabama), what he does all day (is a civil rights lawyer), what his favorite synthesizer is (how could you possibly choose?), his favorite food (sushi) or his favorite record ("The Man Machine")? Could anyone possibly care that he grew up in New York and Washington, D.C., studied guitar, cello, and classical composition, then later philosophy and the history of science in college? Does anyone really want to know that he writes and records his music on old analog synthesizers and drum machines?

  Kell Simon (aka Phasmid) has been collecting electronic instruments and recording electronic music since he was in elementary school, but only recently had he considered the possibility of releasing his recordings. In the fall of 2001, Simon sent out demos of some of his recordings to labels specializing in electronic music, and this led to the establishment of a relationship with the Skylab Operations label based out of Vienna, Austria.

  "Cooper is on Bubbles," is a full-length remix cd, featuring remixes of the track from 15 artists from around the world. The original song, a melodic, electro-influenced track complete with gentle vocoded voices and Kraftwerk-inspired melodies, was ripped apart by the remixers and put back together to represent just about every sub-genre of modern electronica, from drum and bass (Jason Prine's DnB Cut and Paste Mix) to Oval-style glitch (Kenric McDowell's B.I.A.B in a Bubble mix) and quiet, introspective almost-dub (Mall, Anorak). The "Cooper is on Bubbles" remix release has been a featured release on the internet music retailer Darla.com and has garnered international airplay on independent and college radio stations. Phasmid has also appeared as a remixer on Figurine's "Reconfigurine" remix cd, released by Darla Records, and on Skylab Operations' 2088 compilation cd, released earlier this year. As Thaddi Hermann urged in De:Bug magazine, keep an eye out for Phasmid.
